Route 5 of 6

Tournament Route

Measure the stack in decisions, not chips alone

Blinds rise and the stack's relative value changes. Use big blinds, pace and tournament stage to recalibrate the plan.

01

Convert to big blinds

A 40,000 stack can be deep or short depending on the level. Dividing by the big blind reveals the real room available to play the hand.

02

Adapt to the pace

Before acting, confirm the level, ante, remaining time and next increase. Urgency should come from the structure, not anxiety about winning chips.

03

Respect prize jumps

Near the bubble or meaningful pay jumps, survival may gain importance. ICM describes this effect, but it does not make every hand an automatic fold.
